The Body Needs Sunlight

I think modern humans are deeply light deprived.

Not just sleep deprived.
Light deprived.

For most of history, people woke with sunlight, spent much of the day outdoors, and experienced darkness naturally after sunset.

Now many people spend entire days indoors beneath artificial lighting, staring at screens, disconnected from natural light cycles almost completely.

And the body feels it.

Morning sunlight is not just “nice.”
It is biological information.

Light entering the eyes in the morning helps regulate:
circadian rhythm
cortisol timing
melatonin production
hormonal balance
body temperature
energy levels
mood
sleep quality
and nervous system function

The body uses light to understand what time it is.

When these signals become disrupted through artificial lighting, excessive screen exposure, and lack of outdoor time, the nervous system often struggles to maintain healthy rhythms.

And science increasingly supports this connection.

Morning sunlight exposure has been linked to:
better sleep quality
improved mood
healthier cortisol patterns
reduced circadian disruption
and improved mental well-being

Meanwhile, excessive artificial light at night, especially blue light exposure, can suppress melatonin and interfere with the body’s natural sleep-wake cycles.

Personally, I think many people underestimate how healing simple morning light can be.

Stepping outside early.
Opening the windows.
Watching sunrise.
Drinking coffee on the porch.
Walking before checking phones.
Letting the body experience real daylight before artificial stimulation begins.

The nervous system notices these things.

And honestly, I think this is part of why modern life feels so disorienting sometimes.

The body was designed for sunlight, seasons, darkness, rhythms, and gradual transitions.

Not bright screens at midnight.
Not fluorescent lighting all day.
Not constant stimulation from sunrise to sleep.

I do not believe healing always has to begin with something expensive or complicated.

Sometimes it begins with standing in the morning sun for ten quiet minutes and allowing the body to remember the rhythm it was created for.

Creation still knows how to guide the body back toward balance.

We just have to reconnect with it again.
