The Body Needs Darkness

I think one of the most overlooked forms of healing in modern life is darkness.

Real darkness.

Not the dim glow of televisions.
Not scrolling under blankets.
Not blue light glowing across exhausted faces at midnight.

Darkness.

For most of human history, the body experienced light and darkness in natural rhythms.

Sunlight signaled wakefulness.
Darkness signaled rest.

Now many people remain exposed to artificial light nearly every waking hour, often right up until sleep. And the nervous system never fully receives the message that it is safe to power down.

The body was designed to respond to darkness biologically.

When evening arrives naturally, the brain begins increasing melatonin production.
Stress hormones gradually lower.
Body temperature shifts.
The nervous system slows.
The body prepares for restoration.

But artificial light, especially blue light from screens and LED lighting, can interfere with these rhythms dramatically.

And over time, the body often responds with:
poor sleep
fatigue
anxiety
hormonal disruption
brain fog
restlessness
and nervous system exhaustion

Personally, I think many people underestimate how overstimulating modern evenings have become.

Bright overhead lights.
Phones inches from the face.
Constant noise.
Multiple screens at once.
No transition into rest.

The nervous system rarely experiences a true descent into stillness anymore.

That is why I have become increasingly intentional about creating softer evenings.

Lamp light instead of harsh overhead lighting.
Candles flickering softly.
Music played gently.
Phones put away earlier.
Windows open when possible.
Quiet conversation.
Prayer.
Stillness.

The body notices these things.

And honestly?
I think darkness itself feels healing because the body was designed to trust it.

Creation moves in rhythms:
light and dark
activity and rest
morning and evening
work and Sabbath

The body cannot thrive when it is forced into endless stimulation without pause.

Sometimes healing begins by allowing the night to become night again.
